A T1 data line is a high speed 1.54 megabits per second (mbps) circuit which is comprised of 24 individual DS-O circuits. Each DS-O circuit has a speed of 64 kilobits per second (kbps). For perspective, your home telephone line is the equivalent of a DS-O circuit. T1 business lines are also at times referred to as DS1 lines. A T1 business circuit is carried through two twisted pairs of copper wires. (For more about T1 Business please click here)

Virtually, all residences and businesses currently have two pairs of copper wires running to them. T1 lines are capable of delivering 1.54 Mbps simultaneously in both directions (both upload and download), one direction for each pair of copper lines. Because T1 circuits are repeater driven (signal is digitally reestablished about every 6000 feet), it is available virtually everywhere. The price however is affected by distance from the provider’s point of presence (POP), and number of times the signal must be reestablished. When the signal is reestablished, it is perfectly duplicated at near the speed of light, so signal quality is not lessoned by distance. However, because there is cost each time the signal must be reestablished and for the facilities used for the distance from PoP the signal must be carried, T1 business circuit price quotes are generally significantly higher for locations which are remotely located. T1 lines are dedicated, in that they are always connected, and are also extremely stable. Most reputable providers include service level agreements (SLAs), which guarantee the reliability of their T1 circuits, with built in penalties for the provider if written reliability and circuit quality commitments are not honored. SLAs however can provide a false sense of security however. Some of the tier 1 providers with the highest reliability and quality standards do not offer SLAs. In most cases, the penalties to the provider, included in SLAs for when circuits are down, or not working properly, do not come close to compensating for lost revenues which can result from circuit down time. For this reason, it’s more important to look at a company’s established record of circuit quality and reliability, than to go with a less reliable tier 2 provider, simply because they provide an SLA. T1 circuits can transfer data in many forms to accomplish a variety of functions. These include: fractional T1 (commonly 128 Kbps to 1024 kbps), burstable (less expensive for companies which normally do not need a full T1, but at times due to peak work loads, need to burst to full T1 bandwidth), integrated (one T1 line comprised of any combination the types of T1 listed here), channelized DS1 (a type of integrated T1, the other is dynamic integrated), point-to-point (direct private circuit between to locations), dynamic integrated, local (local phone service), pri (voice service which includes many added features which cannot be provided by regular voice T1), and frame relay. Each of these types of DS1/T1 has advantages over the others, depending on the specific needs of your company. Also, the availability of each is based on the offerings of each T1 provider and the geographic proximity of the provider.  Integrated T1 Now Includes Unlimited Free Long Distance Service

Written by: Dennis Green - Mar 11, 2010

Too good to be true? Not any more. Some major integrated T1 telecom providers are now including unlimited free long distance service with their integrated T1 plans. With one integrated T1 circuit, your company can now actually have up to 16 voice lines, dynamic bandwidth allocation (full T1 bandwidth when voice lines are not in use), free unlimited local and long distance service to anywhere in the domestic US (even from metered locations), and up to 5000 minutes of free toll free service per month. All of this is provided for about the same cost, or slightly more than the average data (internet) T1 line. It should be noted that to prevent abuse, all providers which offer unlimited long distance actually place a cap on LD usage. Some, place that cap at 50,000 minutes per month, others at 100,000 minutes per month. If the cap is exceeded, then per minute charges apply to usage over the cap. Also, free unlimited LD plans are not provided to call centers or companies which utilize auto dialers. However, for virtually all small to medium sized companies, which are not call centers, 50,000 minutes of month is usually the equivalent of “unlimited”. Most small to medium sized companies never exceed 20,000 to 30,000 minutes of LD usage in a given month. For large companies, and companies which utilize call centers or auto dialers, there are excellent plans available that will provide unlimited long distance (with no cap) for less than a penny a minute, and unlimited toll free service for about 1.2 cents per minute.
